Academic Qualifications and Awards

Will began playing the trombone at school at age 13 and quickly progressed through Northamptonshire Music School's award-winning county ensembles, playing at the Royal Albert Hall in front of Prince Charles at 17.

His study took him to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where he gained a Bachelor of Music with Honours and a Postgraduate Diploma with distinction under the tutelage of Chris Mowat. Will has performed with all the college ensembles, including a solo performance of Berlioz's Grande Symphonie Funebre et Triomphale with the Wind Band.

He was a regular prize winner, and his accolades include the Richard Clarkson Memorial Prize for the best all-around musician, the Linda Mowat postgraduate brass prize, and the EMI sound foundation bursary for postgraduate study. He was also awarded the position of Graduate assistant to the head of brass.

Will was later awarded the South Square Trust award to study at the Royal Academy of Music, where he graduated with distinction, studying under Dennis Wick, Ian Bousfield and Dudley Bright. He also played with the National Youth Wind Band of Great Britain and was a member of the Britten Pears young artists programme.

Professional Performance Experience

As a professional musician, Will is an experienced performer. He is equally comfortable playing in an orchestra, a chamber group or as a session musician. Brass bands and jazz fall into his repertoire, also.

Will plays both tenor and alto trombone and has performed with the Bristol Ensemble, The Sinfonietta, the British Sinfonietta, WNO, Westminster Chamber Orchestra, English Concertante, The Bernadi Ensemble and The Auralian Ensemble, to name just some of his experiences working alongside professional musicians.

He has played for numerous musicals and recorded for many sessions for BBC Radio 2,3, and 4, ITV and S4C television. He has performed at the Royal Variety Shows for Neil Diamond and McFly. He has also worked as Deputy Orchestral Manager for Milton Keynes City Orchestra, and organises Ensembles for University Ceremonies, corporate events, and private celebrations. If you have any event requiring a trombonist, please contact Will.

Professional Teaching Experience

Will loves to give back, acknowledging the happy memories of playing in school and county ensembles. He currently teaches students, young and old, with the youngest being 6 and the oldest 86. Whether they dream of playing in a brass band, jazz bands, or solos in orchestras, Will knows how to help them reach their goals.

He teaches at The Downs School, Bristol, Taunton School and Blundell's School, Tiverton. He has previously held positions at Redmaids High School in Bristol, Cheltenham Ladies College, and South Gloucestershire Music Service. Teaching duties include educating students on how to play the trombone, trumpet, euphonium, baritone and tuba, conducting ensembles, coaching chamber groups and leading orchestral sectionals. Will has previously worked for "Education Group", a company devoted to taking music workshops to schools.
